This is in the spirit in which Mrs. Loring published her method. She felt that the real problem in American education was that money controlled education. The only way to liberate education from inferior methods was to make available a superior method that every beginning reading teacher could obtain free. It is caused by whole-word memorization of sight-words coupled with instruction that encourages guessing from the context. <em>Blend Phonics<\/em> taught FIRST can <strong>prevent<\/strong> its development, and<em> Blend Phonics<\/em> taught LATER can <strong>cure<\/strong> it.<\/p>\n<h2>Is there a test for Artificially Induced Whole-Word Dyslexia?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. <a title=\"MWIA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.donpotter.net\/pdf\/mwia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Miller Word Identification Assessment<\/a> is available for free to be used to test students before and after learning to read with <em>Blend Phonics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Are there any programs available like <em>Blend Phonics?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yes. There are several programs that I have used and could highly recommend. The main difference is that <em>Blend Phonics <\/em>is <strong>free<\/strong>. Another distinctive advantage of <em>Blend Phonics<\/em> it that it was designed to be taught to whole-classes. It is equally good for one-on-one or whole class instruction. Many programs that are excellent for one-on-one instruction are unwieldly for classroom instruction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What experience do you have teaching reading?<\/h2>\n<p>I taught 21 years in public schools. I resigned from classroom instruction on June 30, 2919, after 13th year in a private Christian school. I hold Texas&#8217; Teacher Certifications in ESL, Elementary Bilingual, Elementary Comprehensive, and Secondary Spanish. I was trained in three Orton-Gillingham Programs: <em>Herman,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Project-Read: The Language Circle, <\/em>and <em>Spalding&#8217;s Writing Road to Reading.<\/em>\u00a0I have taught many highly effective programs, which I will not mention here. \u00a0I can say that none of them, regardless of complexity, cost, or popularity, are more effective that <em>Blend Phonics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>What experience do you have with <em>Blend Phonics?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>I published <em>Blend Phonics<\/em>\u00a0back in 2003 but did not use it until 2007. I had many other commercial programs that were highly effective and answered all my needs; however, I had a yearning to try <em>Blend Phonics<\/em>. In the summer of 2007, I used used it with a first-grader from a local school who had not learn to read anything in first-grade. I found it astoundingly effective. Students from pre-kindergarten through 41 years old have successfully learned to read with me with this program.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Directional Guidance?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Directional Guidance<\/strong> is the distinguishing characteristic of <em>Blend Phonics<\/em>. This is the special feature that <strong>prevents<\/strong> whole-word dyslexia and <strong>cures<\/strong> it. Students begin learning the sounds represented by the letters (letter-to-sound correspondences also called phoneme-to-grapheme correspondences). Instead of word-families and analogy, words are sounded out from left to right one letter at a time: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">b<\/span> + <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a<\/span> = <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ba<\/span>, ba+\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">t<\/span> = <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bat<\/span>. This promotes smooth left to right decoding and totally eliminates guessing. Oral and written spelling also serve to reinfore the directional guidance leadaing to accurate reading, fluency, and good comprehension.<\/p>\n<h2>Doesn&#8217;t Phonics produce mere word-callers?<\/h2>\n<p>This is certainly <strong>not true<\/strong> of <em>Blend Phonics<\/em> because each word is taught with a oral sentence. The students sound-out each word and then make up a oral sentences of their own to illustrate the meaning of the word. If they do not know the word, then the teacher gives them a sentences to illustrate its meaning. The children are taught the <strong>meanings<\/strong> of \u00a02,000 words with <em>Blend Phonics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Where can I get training in <em>Blend Phonics?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>I have published several training videos. There is one short video I did in 2008 that is currently available on YouTube: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QVYdT8EHTpM\">Blend Phonics Video Training<\/a>. Here is a detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QVYdT8EHTpM\">Blend Phonics Teacher Training<\/a>. Here is a Introduction to my <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/La3bmycWnhM\">Blend Phonics Lessons and Stories<\/a>, a reader designed to be used to reinforce the classroom lessons.<\/p>\n<h2>What do reading experts say about the <em>Blend Phonics Techinque?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Let me quote from Isabel L. Beck&#8217;s excellent 2006 (2nd ed. 2024) book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1593852576\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1593852576&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=donpotterwebs-20\">Making Sense of Phonics: The Hows and Whys (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy)<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=donpotterwebs-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1593852576\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In contrast to final blending, I strongly recommend <strong>successive blending <\/strong>(which I have sometimes called <strong>cumulative blending<\/strong>). In <strong>successive blending<\/strong>, students say the first two sounds in a word and immediately blend those two sounds together. They say the third sound and immediately blend that with the first two blended sounds. If it is a four-phoneme word, then they say the fourth phoneme and immediately blend that with the first three blended sounds. The strong advantage of <strong>successive blending<\/strong>\u00a0is that it is less taxing on the short-term memory because blending occurs immediately after each new phoneme is pronounced. As such, at no time must more than two sounds be held in memory (the sound immediately proceed and the one that directly precedes it), and at no time must more than two sound units be blended (50).<\/p>\n<p>Beck mentions another advantage of the blend phonics technique for the teacher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A strong advantage of the <strong>successive blending chain<\/strong>\u00a0is the precise information available to the teacher in locating an error. If a child makes an error while performing the chain, the teacher knows where the error is &#8211; that is, which link in the chain is incorrect. With this kind of precise information, the teacher can give the child a direct prompt&#8230; The availability of precise information enables the teacher to go right into where the problems is and deal with it. This is in contrast to simply knowing that a child didn&#8217;t read <em>black <\/em>or <em>set<\/em>\u00a0correctly (53, 54).<\/p>\n<h2>Where did Loring get her <em>Blend Phonics <\/em>technique?<\/h2>\n<p>Loring tells us that she taught the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donpotter.net\/pdf\/beacon_charts.pdf\">Beacon Phonics Charts<\/a>. \u00a0<a title=\"Beacon TM\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=03MZAAAAYAAJ&amp;pg=PA85&amp;dq=beacon%20charats&amp;as_brr=1#v=onepage&amp;q=beacon%20charats&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beacon Phonics Charts<\/a> when she was a young lady. A careful inspection of the 1912\/1921 <em>Beacon Primer<\/em> and <em>Beacon Readers<\/em> by James Hiram Fassett proves that she got her distinctive ideas from that method. Although the <a title=\"Beacon Primer\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=-W0XAAAAIAAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=beacon%2Bprimer&amp;as_brr=1#v=onepage&amp;q=beacon%2Bprimer&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beacon Primer<\/a>, unfortunately, did teach a few sight-words, the phonics portion of the program has yet to be surpassed. At one time it was the most popular reading method in America. It was replaced by the famous, but highly inferior,\u00a0<em><a title=\"Dick &amp; Jane Wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dick_and_Jane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dick and Jane Readers<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Do you\u00a0recommend multi-sensory instruction?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. All of my <em>Blend Phonics Students<\/em>\u00a0see, say, and write all the words from the chalkboard, and then write them in wide-lined spiral notebooks. Either manuscript or cursive can be used. Personally, I have found <a href=\"http:\/\/donpotter.net\/pdf\/cursivefirst.pdf\">cursive<\/a> to be much more effective than manuscript and now use cursive exclusively with all my tutoring students regardless of age. Document Cameras are particularly effective for multi-sensory teaching. Here is my <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wlwpgNocong\">Cursive Teacher Training Video<\/a>. Here is the <a href=\"http:\/\/donpotter.net\/pdf\/cursive_training.pdf\">Fundamentals of Cursive Handwriting<\/a> I wrote to go the video. Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fbFcum8uEPQ\">Shortcut to Manuscript<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is important that the teacher say the letter names as he or she writes them in cursive or print on the board so the children are seeing and hearing the spellings. I do not for a single minute think that the teaching of letter names interferes with learning to read with phonics. Quite the contrary, I am thoroughly convinced that it greatly facilitates the task of learning to read fluently and spell accurately. Ann Gillingham and Bessie Stillman came to the same conclusion in\u00a0<em><a title=\"Gillingham Manual\" href=\"http:\/\/eps.schoolspecialty.com\/downloads\/povs\/s-og_manual.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Gillingham Manual: Remedial Training for Students with Specific Disability in Reading, Spelling, and Penmanship<\/a><\/em>. Here are my<a href=\"http:\/\/donpotter.net\/pdf\/gillingham_manual.pdf\"> Personal Notes on the Gillingham Manual<\/a>. In regard to teaching letter names to beginning readers, Marilyn J. Adams has come out decisively in favor letter names in her recent, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2ILkxHa\"><em>ABC Foundations for Young Children<\/em><\/a>. Here are is my <a href=\"http:\/\/donpotter.net\/pdf\/alphabet_fluency.pdf\">Alphabet Fluency<\/a> document.<\/p>\n<p><em>Blend Phonics<\/em> is: Multi-sensory, Phonetic, Structural, Cumulative, and Sequential. We use all four modalities: Auditory (listening), Visual (looking), Oral Kinesthetic (speaking), Manual Kinesthetic (writing). Multi-sensory instruction enables fuzzy representations of oral language to become clear, direct, automatic responses to phonemes and graphemes, leaving more working memory available for higher level thinking and writing skills.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How many words are taught in Blend Phonics<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Blend Phonics<\/em> teaches 1,558 words. Of course, the children will be able to read thousands more because they have learned to sound-out the words for themselves. All 44 English speech sounds (phonemes) are taught along with all the major spelling patterns.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Do you teach any sight words?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a loaded question. \u00a0I do not recommend teaching the Dolch or Fry sight words through visual, whole word memorization. So the answer is, &#8220;No.&#8221; On the other hand, in technical literature a &#8220;sight word&#8221; is <strong>any word<\/strong> that is read instantly without need to laboriously sound it out. In that case the answer would be, &#8220;Yes.&#8221; We want all the words in <em>Blend Phonics<\/em>\u00a0to become sight words in the technical sense, but we teach no sight-words. Interestingly all the Dolch List words are included in the<em> Blend Phonics<\/em> program so there is no need to teach separately. Teachers can rest assured that<em> Blend Phonics<\/em> students will score high on any sight words list assessment.<\/p>\n<p>See the <a title=\"Sight Words\" href=\"http:\/\/52.200.218.39\/?page_id=765\">Sight Word<\/a> page for more detailed information.<\/p>\n<p>Concerning sight word memorization, Diane McGuinness informs us, &#8220;This strategy is highly predictive of reading failure.&#8221; Why would anyone want to cause reading failure?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What do you recommend after students complete Blend\u00a0Phonics?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I recommend my paperback book, <a title=\"Beyond Blend Phonics \" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beyond-Blend-Phonics-Donald-Potter\/dp\/1508847657\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1427132505&amp;sr=8-3&amp;keywords=donald+potter+phonics\">Beyond Blend Phonics<\/a>. This book teaches the Anglo-Saxon, Romance (Latin &amp; French) and Greek levels of English. There are 731 words that the children will read; but since the program teaches the morphemes, the children will be able to read thousands more words after completing the program. \u00a0The program was designed to make it easy for students to move quickly to more advanced reading levels. The students should also read lots of stories and informational text in their maturity range.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What place does handwriting and spelling have in Blend Phonics instruction?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Handwriting and spelling are central to Blend Phonics teaching. I generally teach my Shortcut to Manuscript program, which is available for free. There are 638 spelling words in my Blend Phonics Lessons and Stories. Dr. J.
